cheers to 29 seasons
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich steps down

Coach Pop may be leaving the court, but he'll still stay on the team's staff.
It's the start of a new chapter for San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who is stepping down from his coaching role and transitioning to president of basketball operations for the team.
The Spurs confirmed the leadership change on social media, with team CEO Peter J. Holt thanking the San Antonio icon for his dedication over the last 29 years.
"Coach Pop's extraordinary impact on our family, San Antonio, The Spurs and the game of basketball is profound," Holt said in a statement. "His accolades and awards don't do justice to the impact he has had on so many people. He is truly one-of-one as a person, elader and coach. Our entire family, alongside fans from across the globe, are grateful for his remarkable 29-year run as the head coach of the San Antonio Spurs."
Since joining the team as an assistant coach in 1988, Popovich's legacy has produced 1,422 regular season wins and five NBA championships with the Spurs, making him the most successful coach in NBA history. His coaching career also includes two seasons as an assistant coach for the Golden State Warriors from 1992 to 1994, according to a press release.
"I'm forever grateful to the wonderful players, coaches, staff and fans who allowed me to serve them as the Spurs head coach and am excited for the opportunity to continue to support the organization, community and city that are so meaningful to me," Popovich said in a statement.
Taking on the role as the new head coach is Mitch Johnson, who previously served as acting head coach during the 2024-25 season after Popovich had to step back following health concerns after just five games.
According to NBA.com, Johnson is now entering his 10th season with the Spurs, and spent the last six as an assistant coach for Popovich.
