Southtown Art Gallery will present "I See Stars," a celebration of the culmination of two months worth of work by Shelby Criswell that they did while in residence at the gallery. Visitors can meet the artist, see the work, and enjoy all that Southtown has to offer for Second Saturdays.
According to the artist, this show is a synergy of two different mediums that he loves, fiber art and plein air painting. This work documents quiet places he has traveled by foot and bike as well as his family’s lineage of women who can manipulate needle and thread in incredible ways. Taking the long tradition of quilt making and crafting it into his own has not only allowed him to spend more time in nature but has connected him with generations before. He has taken pattern inspiration from traditional Texas quilts as well as improv or "crazy quilts." The bold colors are influenced by the palettes of the Gee’s Bend quilt makers. The process of making these may have started as a gift to himself but the finished work is something he passes on to the viewer, inviting them to listen in on his visual conversation with the outdoors.
