San Antonio Museum of Art will present La Malinche: Traitor | Savior, a new chamber opera by composer Nathan Felix about La Malinche, an enslaved Indigenous girl who became Hernán Cortés’ interpreter and cultural translator. The opera is broken into five short acts over the course of which the audience sees Malinche go from a slave to a tool for Cortés’ conquest of Tenochtitlan. Reviled by her fellow slaves, she fearlessly forges a new path in her belief that a new Mestizo ethnicity is the inevitable future and her lasting impact.

Felix is a Mexican-American composer known for his immersive operas and experimental films. He often focuses on telling Latinx-themed and minority stories that highlight border issues, underserved communities, and his Hispanic heritage. Felix has a long-standing creative partnership with SAMA, where he has premiered some of his most engaging works.
