North Star Mall will host the 11th Annual Canstruction® design/build competition in support of the San Antonio Food Bank’s SA Goes Orange campaign to raise awareness and funds for hunger relief. More than 58,000 people in Southwest Texas rely on the Food Bank’s network of programs and services - and over half a million Southwest Texans are at risk of going hungry.
The competition is part of an international drive under the auspices of the Society for Design Administration to expand public awareness of the hunger crisis worldwide. Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed the hungry. On build day, September 11, 10 teams representing the San Antonio chapters of The American Institute of Architects and the Society for Design Administration are given 12 hours to defy expectations, logic and gravity as they assemble amazing sculptures using approximately 30,000 cans of food.
On Monday, September 12, the supersized masterpieces will be judged on the following qualities at the CANopener awards ceremony attended by industry professionals and special guests:
- Structural Ingenuity
- Best Use of Labels
- Best Meal
- Juror’s Favorite
- Best Use of the Color Orange
- Two Honorable Mentions
The sculptures will remain on display throughout North Star's common areas until September 25. All canned goods used to create the unconventional art exhibits at North Star will be donated to the San Antonio Food Bank at the close of the competition for families in need of assistance. In ten years, Canstruction® has donated more than 425,000 pounds of food.
