Esperanza Peace & Justice Center will present the opening reception of the art exhibit "From Here y De Allá: Reflections on Elizabeth Catlett Mora - an African American artist who embraced Mexico."
The exhibit is a collaboration with the San Antonio Ethnic Arts Society and features 15 works of 17 SAEAS members inspired by Elizabeth Catlett’s work and activism, showcasing a diverse range of creativity and artistry. In addition, thanks to collectors Paula and Edwin Miles, the exhibition will display prints by other well-known African-American artists, including Jacob Lawrence, Margaret Burroughs, Faith Ringgold, George Hunt, and Frank Frazier.
Lecturer Cecilia Santacruz Langagne will present a lecture entitled “The Role of the African American Artist, Elizabeth Catlett, in Modern Mexico," an online live broadcast lecture in Spanish with in-person English translations by Cecilia Sánchez Duarte. The lecture hopes to provide an in-depth look at Catlett’s time in Mexico, examine her art, and discuss her activism with members of Taller de la Gráfica Popular, a progressive artists’ print collective in Mexico.
The exhibition will remain on display through September 30.
