Let's taco bout it
Hot new festival brings tacos, music y mas to downtown San Antonio
There are some ideas that seem so natural that it’s hard to believe it took so long to come up with them. Such is the case with Taco Fest: Music y Más, a new downtown festival combining great food and live music that couldn’t be better suited for San Antonio.
On April 14, more than 30 eateries will descend upon La Villita Historic Arts Village for a party that promises to represent Alamo City tacos in all forms, from classic breakfast offerings to more contemporary interpretations. With tickets ranging from $15-$75 (kids 10 and under get in free), the festival will be accessible to a wide variety of budgets, especially since each of the vendors has been tasked to come up with a taco they can sell for only $2.
The shindig is the brainchild of creative director Jim Mendiola, whose team has worked on some of the area’s most popular festivals such as Día de los Muertos Fest, Maverick Music Festival, San Antonio Beer Festival, and Texas Salsa Festival. In a release, Mendiola says the celebration was “long overdue.”
The food vendors announced so far are a who’s who of local eateries, including Chisme, Tommy's Restaurant, Soluna, Tomatillos Restaurant, Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant, Torchy's Tacos, El Milagrito Cafe, Garibaldi's Mexican Restaurant, La Casa De Barbacoa, Los Cocos Mexican Restaurant Seafood and Fruits, Mr. Meximum, and Chela's Tacos.
Beverages will include Modelo brand beer, cocktails made from Deep Eddy Vodka, wine, aguas frescas, and more.
The music component will focus on oldies and alt-Latino music from both DJs and live acts. More performers will be added closer to the date, but La Santa Cecilia, Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, Santiago Jimenez Jr., Girl in a Coma, Money Chicha, El Conjunto Nueva Ola, Pinata Protest, Femina-X, Bombasta, Los #3 Dinners, Grupo Frackaso, and Eddie & the Valiants are already confirmed.
In addition to the main event, there will be lots of fun for the whole family, with activities for children, a market featuring local artisans, and interactive cooking demonstrations.
A special flash sale will offer deals until March 1 before advance tickets go on sale March 2. Tickets will also be available at the door for a higher price, but programming at Arneson River Theatre and Juarez Plaza will be free and open to the public.
