Coach x Selena Gomez
Pop star Selena Gomez takes on new role as handbag designer
Pop star Selena Gomez is debuting her first collaboration with accessories company Coach. It's the Selena Grace handbag, named after the star and "the quality she most embodies," according to a press release.
Silly me. I thought it was a nod to the Hermès Kelly handbag, which is named for iconic actress and princess Grace Kelly. After all, Gomez played a princess-like character named Grace in the 2011 movie Monte Carlo.
While the Hermès Kelly retails for upwards of five figures, the Coach Selena Grace costs $395, within the range of the Grand Prairie, Texas-raised singer's aspirational fans.
The double-handled carryall, which Gomez designed with Coach creative director Stuart Vevers, features several of the singer's personal touches. "Love yourself first" in her handwriting — a phrase inspired by one of her tattoos — is embossed on the base of the bag, and the empowering message “To be you is to be strong” is sewn on a patch inside. The bag also includes a handtag featuring her signature.
“I’m very excited for everyone to finally see the design Stuart and I worked on together,” Gomez said in a statement. “I can’t wait to carry it — it’s totally versatile, perfect to wear day-to-night, and it goes with everything.”
The handbag, which will be in Coach stores on September 1 with pre-sale beginning on August 14, comes in three colors: Black cherry, white, and red. Fans can go on coach.com now through August 22 to register for a chance to win a signed Selena Grace bag and a trip for two to meet Gomez on September 13 at Coach House on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
Gomez's collaboration with Coach also includes a limited edition collection of small leather goods and accessories, including wristlets, key chains, and coin purses.
What's more, Gomez is appearing in the brand's fall 2017 ad campaign and is partnering with the Coach Foundation in its support of Step Up, a national organization dedicated to the empowerment of teen girls from under-resourced communities.
Coach made news earlier this year when it acquired Kate Spade for $2.4 billion.
