Rhymes with Celebrate
San Antonio goes big for National Poetry Month this April
National Poetry Month takes place each April and is one of the largest literary celebrations in the world. This month, the poetry community comes together to provide activities, initiatives, and resources so that anyone can join in online and at home.
In San Antonio, this means a robust lineup of events for all to enjoy. It all kicks off with the 10th annual Viva Poesía, taking place on Saturday, April 6, starting at 6 pm at Mission Marquee Plaza. This year’s theme is “Confluence of the Creative Arts,” inspired by the Surrealist exquisite corpse game. In tribute to this age-old game of collaborative compositions, Viva Poesia will unite local poets, visual artists, and chefs to craft poetry, visual art, and dishes that surprise and spark the imagination.
Stop by The Twig Book Shop for poetry readings, meet-and-greets, and book signings, or check out any of the workshops presented by Gemini Ink Writing Arts Center.
All ages are welcome to share their words at the San Antonio Public Library's poetry reading event on April 13, or stay a little longer for the 12th annual San Antonio Book Festival, held at the same branch from 10 am-6 pm.
Youth poets ages 13 and up are invited to enter this year's bilingual Voice de la Luna Annual Youth Poetry Festival, held April 27 at The Guadalupe Latino Bookstore. The deadline to enter is April 15 and all forms are accepted, including visual and collage poetry.
