There's no shortage of college students who have worked — perhaps a little too diligently — at creating the perfect chicken wings. But two University of Texas graduates hit the frying basket jackpot with Pluckers Wing Bar, a small chain that started as a college idea and is now beginning to conquer more and more of Texas, including San Antonio's Brooks community.

The latest Pluckers will roost in its fourth San Antonio-area location (2714 S.E. Military Dr.) on January 28, in a convenient pocket of practical shopping locations like H-E-B, Target, Walmart, and the Home Depot.

It'll compete with several chain restaurants including a Dave's Hot Chicken just feet down New Braunfels Ave. James Beard Award semi-finalist Nicola Blaque also opened a high-profile fired chicken eatery this week.

Pluckers' main strength is its straightforwardness; The classic sports bar almost exclusively serves fried finger foods (right down to the fried Twinkies), with an emphasis on its 28 wings flavors. These include everything from the standard Buffalo sauce at multiple heat levels, to the more adventurous Korean gochujang, to the amicable garlic parmesan.

“There has been a lot of recent expansion and growth for Pluckers all around Texas, and we’re excited to start the new year with our first grand opening of 2024,” said Pluckers director of marketing Kristin McMinn in a press release.

“We’re looking forward to sharing our renowned wings, popular sauces, and wide variety of flavors with our devoted fans in Brooks," she continued, "and we love the proximity to downtown San Antonio."

A spokesperson for the brand points out that the location will be open just in time for the Super Bowl. In previous years, Pluckers has accepted reservations to help organize the football crowd, and even run a contest for free chicken for a year to anyone who guesses the game's final score.
