No matter how the restaurant scene or media landscape changes, the prestige of ending up on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives prevails. The honor now goes to San Antonio's Ro-Ho Pork & Bread, which will appear on the episode “Tortas, Tomatoes & Tequila” on Friday, December 6.
Ro-Ho, named for chef-owner and Guadalajara native Jorge Rojo, is known for its tortas ahogadas, and that's what the show will focus on. These slow-cooked pork sandwiches will surely be worthy of host Guy Fieri's signature hunch. They're on fresh birote bread — a crusty sourdough roll — with a spicy tomato sauce.
Diners trying one of these tortas can get it with pork butt or stomach carnitas, or a mix of both with pork skin. There's also a vegetarian version with avocado and bean puree.
Although Ro-Ho is famous for its tortas, there are plenty of other options on the menu including tacos, "Chilakillers" (a twist on chilaquiles), nachos, and even salad.
Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives has aired on the Food Network since 2007, and it's mostly stayed true to its founding premise. Although a place like Ro-Ho may not be what most people think of as a diner, a drive in, or a dive, it is extremely homey. Dishes are served in woven baskets wrapped in plastic, and the best seating is on an enclosed porch.
It's also a good place for tourists to visit after watching the episode, since it's located right on the edge of the airport at 8617 N. New Braunfels Ave. Decorated with interesting art featuring Mexican themes, it's a great introduction to the city's Tex-Mex culture.
“Tortas, Tomatoes & Tequila,” will air at 8 pm CST on December 6.
