Summer Screenings
San Antonio's longest-running Latino film fest reveals blockbuster lineup
This summer, the nation's longest-running Latino film festival will return for its 40th year — and it's celebrating the best of Texas. CineFestival sponsored by the San Antonio Film Commission runs July 5-8, and features more than 50 films from Latino filmmakers and directors.
In honor of this year's theme, Hecho en Tejas, the four-day fête will screen 41 films either shot in Texas or created by Texas directors. Of those 41 films, more than half come from San Antonio filmmakers, including San Antonio's own Jesse Borrego. “This 40th anniversary edition celebrates the Tejano film community and honors the CineFestival familia of the past," said Cristina Balli, executive director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, the nonprofit who puts on the festival.
Fresh off its debut at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival, We the Animals, directed by Jeremiah Zagar, opens CineFestival on July 5 at the Guadalupe Theater. Other highlights include the Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase, a celebration of female filmmakers living on or near the U.S./Mexico border, which screens on July 6; Borrego's film Closer to Bottom, which screens on July 7; and Ruben Blades Is Not My Name directed by Abner Benaim, which also runs on July 7.
Children will also have a reason to head to theater. This year's programming includes two screenings of Coco in Spanish, as well as a showing of Ferdinand during CineFest's Family Day on July 8.
Closing out this year's festival is Carla Simon's Summer 1993, which won three Goya Awards (the Spanish equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Director, Best New Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. The film shows at the Guadalupe Theater on July 8.
