New fitness studio for Pilates-like exercise sweats it out in San Antonio
Extremely hot days are nearly upon us — or already are, depending on your personal threshold for heat — and San Antonians are going to be spending more time inside. Urban Lagree, a fitness studio based on "Megaformer" use, is giving locals a chance to sweat inside (how novel) starting June 10.
San Antonians can't be blamed for not recognizing these terms; Only a couple of studios around town offer Lagree Fitness classes, and only as a secondary option. This will be the first Urban Lagree in the city, located at 3910 McCullough Ave. in Olmos Park. It's the third for trainers Abigayle Rosser and Katie Hayes, who already own two Austin locations (that have fantastic Google reviews), and are opening another in South Austin.
It's not just the heat that keeps Texans from hitting the trails. Running and plyometrics are great for high-energy workouts, but they're also high-impact, meaning that both feet leave the ground at once and sensitive joints may suffer as a result. These Megaformers, essentially a proprietary alternative to a Pilates reformer, were designed as the base for the Lagree Fitness method in 1998 to reduce impact without sacrificing intensity — good for sensitive exercisers who still want a challenge.
A spring-loaded sliding carriage on a large platform provides a floor for the exerciser, who then expends energy by pushing, pulling, and stabilizing their body against the more stationary parts. A press release announcing the new location names main targets of core stability, cardio endurance, and strength. Blogs and individuals tend to agree that Lagree is more intensive than Pilates, but neither is inherently better.
“We are thrilled to bring Urban Lagree to San Antonio,” said Hayes and Rosser in the release. “Nothing can beat the Lagree method when it comes to toning and shaping your body. We look forward to sharing this strength training workout with this new community.”
Of course, most folks won't hop on the Megaformer and know what to do, so this is a class-based exercise. Drop-in classes are $30, but early launch deals will provide other ways in.
Curious San Antonians can stop by a free open house from 11 am to 1 pm on Saturday, June 15, to learn more about the Lagree method. There will also be health and wellness vendors, giveaways, a live local DJ, and more. (Visitors can also check out the mural by local artist Joseph Ramey.)
A limited number of Founding Memberships ($165 per month, unlimited) and 10-class packs ($175) will be available, plus other membership rates. Pre-booking is already open at urbanlagree.com. The studio will start with 45-minute full body workouts exclusively, seven days a week, before opening up other options — including studio buyouts — after the first month.
