Calling All Outsiders
Free community event invites all San Antonians into city parks
San Antonio, it's time to touch grass. The season for outdoor festivals is upon us, and this brainy effort by the San Antonio Parks Foundation and City of San Antonio Parks & Recreation Department wants to get locals more acquainted with nature — without leaving the city.
Outside for All, an annual celebration, is returning October 12 from 9 am to noon at the Berta Almaguer Community Center at Woodlawn Lake. Of course, it will be held outside so that guests can enjoy nature while working on improving access to it.
José González, founder of community leadership organization Latino Outdoors, will serve as a keynote speaker, delivering thoughts on how to make outdoor spaces more inclusive. The free, public talk will be called "Leadership in Nature, Natural Connections," and community members are invited to participate.
González's specialty as a professional educator is to make information accessible, having experience with K-12 learners as well as university students. He is also a partner at diversity, equity, and inclusion organization Avarna Group; a trustee for the National Outdoor Leadership School; and a board director for Parks Now.
“José Gonzalez’s expertise and passion for inclusivity in outdoor recreation will set a powerful tone for our event,” said San Antonio Parks Foundation president and CEO Mary Jane Verette. “We are also fortunate to have Jeanette [Honermann], Josie [Gutierrez], Bree [Jameson], and Sara [Ramirez] facilitating discussions that will ensure all voices are heard.”
Essentially a nature conference, this event will feature several nonprofit exhibitors, including:
- Mitchell Lake Audubon Center
- Texas Wildlife Association
- Big Brothers Big Sisters
- San Antonio Public Library’s Little Read Wagon
- Medina River Natural Area
- RiverAid
- Green Spaces Alliance
- Friends of McAllister Park
- Earn A Bike
