San Antonio was a top 10 destination for movers in 2022, study says

Many Americans relocated to Texas’ Sunbelt region in 2022, but San Antonio residents may be surprised to see the city movers set as their destination. Perhaps they're also a little relieved to learn that city is Houston. However, San Antonio is still a top 10 destination for American movers, according to a the latest “Top Moving Destinations” report from Penske Truck Rental.

San Antonio only ranked No. 9 this year, which is a three-place drop from the 2021 report. But the city did outrank Austin, which came in at No. 10. Meanwhile, 2022 was Houston’s second consecutive year as the No. 1 moving destination. Dallas' rank remained the same year-over-year from the previous report at No. 7.

Penske has been reporting on the migration patterns of Americans for 13 years, using data from the U.S. cities with the most inbound one-way consumer rentals throughout the year. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated 23.7 million Americans moved in 2022, which is about 4 percent more than in 2021.

In the report, Penske Senior Vice President Kevin Malloy said it’s “always exciting” to find out where the company’s customers are moving with each new release.

“We understand just how hectic the moving experience can be and pride ourselves on putting the consumer first throughout the rental experience,” he said.

Penske’s top 10 moving destinations in 2022 are:

No. 2 – Las Vegas
No. 3 – Orlando, Florida
No. 4 – Phoenix
No. 5 – Atlanta
No. 6 – Charlotte, North Carolina
No. 7 – Dallas
No. 8 – Jacksonville, Florida
No. 9 – San Antonio
No. 10 – Austin

With the arrival of National Moving Month in May, Penske decided to commemorate the month by releasing four specially-curated playlists on Spotify. Each playlist is under an hour and a half long, and has its own unique “vibe” to describe what it feels like to move. They also come with apt names: “Pack It Up,” “Moving on Mix,” “Forwarding Address,” and “Make This House, Home.”

The song choices are intended to “help people look forward to the journey ahead,” according to Malloy.

One of the first things real estate agent Paola Seifernoticed about The Dominion is that it is reminiscent of the place she grew up: Madrid, Spain.

“The nature all around and the master plan reminds me of the place where I used to live in Madrid called La Moraleja,” she says. So she was more than happy to make it her new location for both work and home.

“Here at The Dominion, you can find some of the most unique and opulent custom homes in San Antonio, from a charming one-story garden home to a 9,000-square-foot estate,” says Seifer. “The best architects in the city have designed many of the homes, making the neighborhood even more beautiful.”

Residents also enjoy numerous amenities, such as lavish greenbelts and man-made lakes along with the incredible schools in Northside ISD and the highest level of security and safety. Guards are stationed at The Dominion's three main gates 24 hours a day.

Seifer’s favorite hidden-gem park, The Lakes, is located close to the main entrance. And adjacent to the neighborhood is The Dominion Country Club, which has an 18-hole, 260-acre golf course.

Where to eat & drink
“Aldo’s Ristorante Italiano and SILO Terrace Oyster Bar are two fabulous restaurants just across the street from the neighborhood,” says Seifer.

She also recommends the bar at J-Prime Steakhouse and the vintage-chic Tardif's American Brasserie for a great cocktail and vibe.

Where to play
Golfers will want to head to The Dominion Country Club.

For retail therapy that’s only seven minutes away, Seifer suggests The Shops at La Cantera and The Rim shopping center. Both destinations also have various pop-up markets, fests, and seasonal events like summer movies, music, and yoga.

What to see
The Moon’s Daughter on the 20^th floor of the Thompson San Antonio hotel is a must. The enchanting indoor-outdoor rooftop lounge and bar floats high above the River Walk and the views of the twinkling city at night are incredible.

Where to live
“The Dominion has an assortment of styles that all harmonize together, from traditional to Tuscan-style to contemporary,” says Seifer.

One prime example of a home in the neighborhood is 6307 Granada Way. Seifer was the buyer's agent on this six-bedroom beauty, which boasts statement-making architecture along with features like a wine cellar and a huge primary suite with an expansive dressing room and closet.

“Paola’s knowledge of the market and the area helped us to decide on the perfect home very quickly,’ says the buyer. “She knew we were new to the area and helped us get settled with several local recommendations, too.”

Where to eat & drink
Savor one of the Hill Country’s best sunset views and a classic Texas menu at Bay View Restaurant & Bar — the shrimp and grits is one of their signature dishes that absolutely must be ordered. Plus, brunch is served everyday (get the blue crab cake Benedict).

Kokernot and Jones also recommend Boat Town Burger Bar for waterfront casual dining and live music on summer weekends. You can even order a meal straight from your own boat.

Where to play
Lake LBJ and its sandbars are all you need. But, for those who prefer a day on dry land, Kokernot and Jones mention that three of the golf courses at Horseshoe Bay Resort are premier Robert Trent Jones Sr.-designed courses (Slick Rock, Apple Rock, and Ram Rock)— “a rare gem in the golf world!”

Whitewater 360 Sports Club at the resort is a great place to relax and watch a game after a round of golf.

What to see
Horseshoe Bay Resort hosts a range of festivals throughout the year, including the Beer by the Bay Music Festival in August.

Where to live
“The area offers luxury lake and golf course homes featuring modern, traditional, and Tuscan-inspired architecture with a Hill Country style that’s second to none,” says Jones.

One example of the area’s stunning waterfront properties is a Mediterranean-meets-Texas home at 101 Far North in Horseshoe Bay. Kokernot and Jones helped their buyers find this lakeside gem to entertain family and friends.

“They had just driven in from Scottsdale, Arizona, and were looking for a lakefront destination,” says Kokernot. “Once Ryan and I took them on a tour of the area and took them golfing, our buyers fell in love with Horseshoe Bay and Lake LBJ.”

Where to eat & drink
Hufstetler recommends La Cascada Table & Bar at Tapatio Springs Hill Country Resort. They serve farm-to-table Texas fare (try the cast iron-fried Akaushi beef with mushroom gravy and smoked Cheddar whipped potatoes) paired with local wine and craft beer. Live music on their expansive outdoor patio overlooking the Hill Country is a treat, too.

Where to play
An avid golfer himself, Hufstetler says to look no further than the award-winning Resort Course at Tapatio Springs. It’s surrounded by live oak trees and offers incredible views.

What to see
You can enjoy the great outdoors at Cibolo Bluffs Nature Preserve, a scenic 2,000-acre landscape that encompasses nearly three miles of Cibolo Creek. It was originally established to protect a federally endangered Central Texas songbird: the golden-cheeked warbler.

Where to live
“Hill Country classic is the predominant architectural style, with lots of limestone and glass,” says Hufstetler. “Standing-seam metal roofs are plentiful, too.”

Boerne is also a place where you can scoop up some undeveloped land and custom-build a dream home. He recently sold 4.5 acres of land at 31905 IH-10 W for just that purpose.
