Chama Gaúcha debuts new downtown San Antonio steakhouse

Three years after teasing its second San Antonio location, Chama Gaúcha is finally carving a place in the downtown dining scene. The locally owned Brazilian steakhouse says it is now welcoming guests at 217 E Houston St.

The opening now makes the 200 block of Houston a sort of steak district. In addition to Chama Gaúcha, The Palm and Bohanan’s Prime Steaks and Seafood are just steps away from the Majestic Theatre.

Chama was founded in 2008 by João Carlos Ongaratto, a 20-year veteran of Fogo de Chão who struck out on his own with a restaurant at 18318 Sonterra Pl. The mini-chain now has locations in Houston, Chicago, and Grapevine in addition to Alamo City.

Chama Gaúcha follows the churrascaria template, serving a dozen cuts of meat like picanha (prime cut sirloin), cordeiro (lamb), and porco (pork ribs dusted in parmesan). Gauchos wander around the dining room, hand-carving the cuts from skewers at the table.

Beloved Helotes bakery swaps snug storefront for new home

One of the San Antonio area’s most lauded breadmakers is proofing a new bakery. Helotes’ Spread the Loaves is trading its snug storefront for a bigger space in The Shops at Old Town Helotes, 14743 Old Bandera Rd. The original location’s last day is June 2.

“Hope you’re planning to come see us this week, because it’s the last week in our tiny little building,” wrote the bakery on Facebook. “We will be closed all next week to finish getting the new building ready and make the move.”

Spread the Loaves said it doesn’t have an exact date for the reopening, which is still pending permits. But the business won’t have to lug its equipment across town — the new shop is located directly behind the original bakery.

Owner Sophie Jeffrey started baking as a 2020 New Year’s resolution, getting plenty of practice during the height of COVID-19 lockdowns. She started making larger batches in 2021 to help friends and neighbors recovering from Winter Storm Uri.

More pop-ups followed, and Jeffrey took the leap to brick-and-mortar in early 2024. Since then, social media buzz has made her profile rise. In 2025, CultureMap nominated her for the San Antonio Tastemaker Award for Pastry Chef of the Year.

Each week, Spread the Loaves bakes up various sweets, including sugar cookies, brioche cinnamon rolls, and toaster pastries. But she is most known for her breads. Sourdough focaccia and loaves are served daily, joined by milk bread, baguettes, challah, and pretzels at the end of the week.

Locals who can hardly wait for their carb fix can follow the bakery on social media for updates on the reopening date. Megafans can even help move the heavier equipment, according to the post. We’re sure Jeffrey will have a few treats to share for their trouble.

Iconic South San Antonio record store in limbo after rent lockout

One of San Antonio’s most iconic record stores is facing an uncertain future after being locked out of its longtime South Side home. Flip Side Record Parlor, at 840 SW Military Dr, is seeking community support to repay its landlord so it can reopen the shop.

“Right now, FSRP is going through an incredibly difficult financial crisis,” wrote business owner Roman Cuellar on Instagram. “I know many of us are feeling the squeeze of the current economy and rising costs of living, and it pains me to share that our shop is facing those same harsh realities.”

The post explains that Flip Side fell behind after a steep rent hike. The shop maintains that it has been making partial payments, but will not have access to the space until the balance is paid in full.

The record store, which first opened in 1972, has had a turbulent decade. Former owner Clarisa Peña, a longtime employee who took over the reins after original owner Doug Lease’s death, lost her battle with colon cancer in 2020. At the time, her daughter, Jessica Erevia, told the San Antonio Current that she wasn’t sure if she wanted to keep the store open because it was no longer self-sustaining.

Ultimately, the keys went to another employee who had worked in the store since the ‘90s — Peña’s brother, Roman. Cuellar maintained the shop’s original character, including the burning incense that greeted customers at the door.

Flip Side is asking for community contributions to help reopen the store, but has not posted any fundraising updates since its initial plea. In the comments, Cuellar assured customers that Satchmo, the store’s chatty parrot mascot, is safe.

6 stellar San Antonio barbecue joints you might have missed

With such an abundance of stellar San Antonio barbecue joints, it's easy to stick to go-to spots. We say it’s time to branch out. These six spots may not nab the national spotlight, but are worth a smokey adventure — because at the end of the day, supporting local is a win-win, no matter where you stop to eat.

Bucán Rodeo
Parked at the okayest bar on Grayson Street (Three Star Bar for the uninitiated), Bucán Rodeo's Puerto Rican barbecue fusion is anything but ordinary. You're not going here for your standard slice of brisket — chefs Roy Baker and Michael Barrera treat their menu like a Boricua love letter. Think classic barbecue meats dressed with a guava barbecue sauce, sides like mofongo (fried green plantain), plus hearty beans, sausage, incredibly juicy pork belly burnt end tacos, and slow-roasted pernil. This isn't Baker and Barrera's first food truck rodeo, and it certainly won't be the last.

Go'Shen Point BBQ
Go'Shen Point BBQ is self-dubbed as "fireman-owned and family operated." Naturally, that sense of service shines in the menu. Go'Shen opts for post-oak wood to smoke its meats (traditional options like brisket, pulled pork, ribs, and sausage). The result? A light, crowd-pleasing flavor that's enhanced well with Go'Shen's scratch-made barbecue sauces. In a city that celebrates its veterans, it's important to show support for first responder-owned businesses. We salute a catering operation that brings the smoke to your backyard.

Zeke's BBQ Smokehouse
A Westside gem for 24 years and counting, Zeke's proudly proclaims itself as the Cheers of San Antonio barbecue restaurants. The family-owned eatery also has a slew of great barbecue plate deals — no mean feat with inflation. If you're craving a sense of down-home Q' with a side of sauce, try Zeke's hearty brisket sub. Zeke's also has plenty of comforting sides (mac ‘n' cheese, potato salad, green beans, coleslaw, and so on), sandwiches, and taco deals.

Rusty Bucket Jawsmacking BBQ
With an unforgettable name, Rusty Bucket Jawsmacking BBQ has been serving up serious meat sweats on the Southside since 2018. Besides the standard assortment of plates, Rusty Bucket has fun with its sandwich offerings. Ever try a Hogzilla sandwich? At Rusty Bucket, it comes with pulled pork, sausage, bacon, and coleslaw. For those arriving with a bit less of an appetite, the restaurant has lighter options like the Cowboy Bowl (chopped brisket and mac), chili bowls, and the option to get a single taco or sausage link a la carte.

BBQ Life by Chris
Essentially a second-generation family-owned and operated restaurant (BBQ Life by Chris used to be Ed's Smok-N-Q, operated by pitmaster Chris's father, Ed Ashford), BBQ Life by Chris continues a family legacy with damn good brisket. An Eastside stable, BBQ Life by Chris has a menu big enough to appease every appetite. There are sandwiches with a generous serving of mesquite-smoked meat (the Outlaw sandwich is a top choice), meat plates, lunch specials, home-cooked sides like Spanish rice and smoked mac ‘n’ cheese, and the classic desserts like peach cobbler and banana pudding.

Greg Singleton’s Gunnin’ for Glory: The Wild, Weird, Wonderful Stories of the USFL's San Antonio Gunslingers tells the story of one of the city’s few stabs at major league football.

Singleton was the media information director for the United States Football League team during its brief, two-season ‘80s run.
