New River Walk doughnut tour launches in San Antonio

Were he in San Antonio, Homer Simpson is probably drooling right now. The Underground Donut Tour has launched, well, doughnut tours on the River Walk, part of a three city expansion in Texas.

In a release, the company says it blends food and history in its roughly two-hour strolls. The bites aren’t relegated to just donuts, incorporating pastries and other sweet treats. Austin gets a kolache stop, which seems like a good way to temper a tween sugar rush.

Although the tour did not mention the sites in the release, its San Antonio booking page does offer some clues. The walk starts at Gunter Hotel’s Paris Baguette and ends at Paciugo Gelato. It also mentions a “beloved local bakery known for combining Mexican pan dulce traditions with classic French baking techniques.” (Ahem, La Panadería.)

No actual doughnut shops are mentioned in the promo materials, but surely a detour to Voodoo Doughnut is warranted.Chicago entrepreneur Jeff Woelker founded the tour in 2015 as a fun side gig. Since then, the company says it has hosted guests in 25 cities in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

In addition to San Antonio and Austin, the tours are launching in Dallas.“We’re incredibly excited to launch our newest tours in Texas,” said Jeff Woelker, founder of the Underground Donut Tour.

“Each of these cities and neighborhoods offers a unique blend of culture, history, and amazing food. We’ve curated experiences that highlight the best sweet treats while giving guests a fun and memorable way to explore these cities.”Tickets for the family friendly tour are $70 for adults and $60 for children 10 and under. Tickets can be booked online.

Dirty Dough cookie chain closes its last San Antonio bakery

Bakery chain Dirty Dough is once again having trouble finding its footing in San Antonio. The cookie company closed its remaining Alamo City shop at 10722 Potranco Rd. on April 1.

“After much thought, we want to share that our Potranco location of Dirty Dough will be closing, the business wrote on social media. “We are incredibly grateful for the love and support from our San Antonio community…Thank you for being part of our story, for supporting a local business, and for all the sweet memories we’ve created together.”

Dirty has had a rocky start in San Antonio. The brand debuted in San Antonio in 2022, but the franchise shuttered a mere six months later, with local operator Jalon Miyasaki blaming the December 2023 exit on "slow business.”

That same month, another operator debuted the Potranco Road location. That, too, was not an immediate success. In April 2024, the San Antonio Current reported that the owner was asking for community support to keep the lights on.

Dirty Dough is known for its plump cookies, which are "engineered from the inside out" with various mix-ins, fillings, and crunchy toppings. The bakery is always on top of trends, combining classics like chocolate chip and strawberry shortcake with flavors like ube rainbow pebbles and amaretto cherry.

More recently, it has become a one-stop sweets shop, adding goodies like maple bacon cinnamon rolls, fluffernutter bars, churro waffle bites, and shakes. The brand has also adopted the dirty soda trend with drinks like Dreamsicle Delight made with Fanta Orange, vanilla syrup, and cream.

The brand first got its footing with some dorm room kitchen experimentation at Arizona State University, before entrepreneur Bennett Maxwell made it into a viable brand. The immediate popularity, however, soon drew the ire of Utah franchise Crumbl Cookies.

In 2022, the “Utah Cookie Wars” erupted. Crumbl hit Dirty with a pair of lawsuits accusing the company of cribbing trade secrets. Dirty fought back by erecting billboards on Crumbl’s home turf that read “Cookies So Good We're Being Sued” and “Our Cookies Don't Crumble with Competition.”

Since settling the Crumbl lawsuits and being acquired by restaurant platform Craveworthy Brands in 2024, the brand is once again on a growth spurt, opening new stores and expanding to grocery store shelves. Those new units include one that will land at 5216 Broadway in Alamo Heights later in the year.

When producer Don Law converted room 414 at San Antonio’s Gunter Hotel into an ad hoc recording studio, he was attempting to capture the regional sounds that were blossoming during the Great Depression. Recording that flurry of musical styles — country, gospel, Tejano, and Delta blues — he made Robert Johnson immortal.

90 years after that November 1936 session, the downtown landmark is throwing the blues icon a belated birthday party. The Gunter will host a celebration of Johnson’s 115th birthday and his eternal imprint on American music, beginning May 7.

The centerpiece of the weekend is a concert showcase on May 8 starring Austin prodigies The Peterson Brothers, acclaimed blues guitarist Sue Foley, and genre-blending San Antonian Nicky Diamonds. For the latter, the show marks a sort of homecoming. As a child, he was so obsessed with Johnson that he unsuccessfully tried to sneak into room 414. Surely, the hotel will now offer him a private tour.

The show is just one note in a day filled with musical programming. At 4 pm, KRTU’s Bria Woods will chat with Diamonds, Alex Peterson, and Glenn Peterson Jr. about Johnson’s indelible impact on blues.
New San Antonio spot gives African cuisine the Chipotle treatment

Fusion cuisine has wrapped almost everything in a tortilla, from Korean bulgogi to Jamaican jerk chicken. Now, San Antonio’s Afrotex Grill, newly opened at 6422 Babcock Rd. on the Northwest Side, is giving West African suya the burrito treatment.

The restaurant comes from the team behind Suya Mix Bistro. The popular ghost kitchen specializes in its namesake dish — grilled meat coated in a spiced peanut-based dry rub. Afrotex fires up chicken, beef, wings, and salmon in plates with sides like corn or plantain.

But its biggest innovation comes when jollof, the smoky tomato-based rice dish beloved throughout the region, is added to the mix. The restaurant takes its cues from the quick-service model of restaurants like Chipotle. And jollof is readily remixed into bowls with field mix or rolled into a wrap.

Guests can make each dish their own by adding various vegetables, but the condiments earn the Afrotex name. The restaurant lets patrons choose from Nigerian ata dindin (a fried pepper sauce), Tex-Mex pico de gallo, and its own house ranch.

Afrotex sells a variety of nonalcoholic options, ranging from bottled sodas to Poppi, but many visitors no-doubt will want to try its house originals. Lagos Sunset blends fresh lemonade with mango and passion fruit. Zobo is a popular Nigerian drink made from dried hibiscus petals. It sips a little like a San Antonio staple, jamaica agua fresca.

Locals can try out Afrotex Tuesday through Saturday, 11 am-11 pm, and Sunday from 11:30 am-6 pm. The restaurant is closed on Mondays.
