San Antonio's first hemp cafe joint comes to town, plus more food news

Editor's note: We get it. It can be difficult to keep up with the what’s what and who’s who of San Antonio food. But we have you covered with our regular roundup of the freshest local restaurant news.

Dab, San Antonio’s first hemp and CBD cafe quietly debuted in late May at 105 Warren St. in Five Points. Working with local purveyors Puro Nitro and La Popular Bakery, the restaurant offers a variety of coffee drinks and pastries like doughnuts and “hempanadas.” The shop also makes its own juices with wink-wink names like Watermelon Kush and Pineapple Express.

Fast-casual restaurant MOD Pizza will be firing up its third San Antonio location June 29 in the Westover Marketplace at 8211 State Highway 151. Based in Bellevue, Washington, the concept allows guests to build their own pie from a variety of toppings, then cooks the custom creations on the spot in a couple of minutes. To celebrate the opening, MOD will be gifting free salad or pizza to the first 52 customers, among other giveaways. All proceeds of the pizza sales from that day go to suicide prevention nonprofit The Jed Foundation.

This summer’s bun apocalypse, which earlier afflicted In-N-Out and Whataburger, has hit H-E-B. On June 23, the grocery giant recalled a variety of H-E-B and Hill Country Fare breads with best by dates between June 26 and July 2. According to a release, the culprit was an imbalance in the supplier’s yeast that degraded quality but did not pose a health risk. See the full list of recalled products here.

To celebrate San Antonio’s Tricentennial, Shiner Bock brewers Spoetzl Brewery has announced its first-ever collaboration. In a nod to Alamo City’s rich history and culture, the brewery is working with the Canary Island’s Agüita Cerveza Artesanal to release two beers: Las Canarias Ale, a Belgian-style blonde ale using gofio (a Canarian roasted wheat flour), and Texas honey and Tenerife Ale, a red Canary Island ale. Both will be available at the Pearl during the summer-long Olé San Antonio programming.

Bakery Lorraine has introduced a happy hour with a twist at its location in The Rim. Instead of vodka sodas, enjoy a complimentary coffee with each pastry purchase and $18 carafes of grapefruit or orange juice mimosas from 3-6 pm on weekdays.

The Twig Book Shop’s Miss Anastasia has started a monthly reading club at Cherrity Bar. As you enjoy drinks and food, your kids can discover the joy of books. The free events will occur ever third Wednesday of the month at 6 pm, starting on June 27.

Three flavors of Twang-A-Rita won gold medals at the Los Angeles International Spirits Competition in May. The homegrown company, best known for flavored salts, scored high marks for its Nectarberry (strawberry and lime); Sunrise Spice (chili pepper and lime); and Paloma Love (grapefruit, sugar, and salt) varieties.
