Daughters of the Dust is a multigenerational tale in which a black family from the Gullah Sea Islands struggles to hold on to their culture in the face of change. Julie Dash earned critical acclaim for Daughters, the first feature film directed by an African American woman. In her visual album Lemonade, Beyoncé pays homage to Dash’s lush, languid landscapes.
